It’s That Time of Year

Val, a guy I went to high school with “back in the day,” allowed his daughter to use his Facebook account to solicit his “friends” to buy Girl Scout cookies.  While he lives in a small community in the East Bay of San Francisco and I live in Florida, there are still opportunities to do a little e-commerce transaction.  Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout…so each year I buy cookies even though my scale begs otherwise.  This year, I thought it would be great to support Val’s daughter (as a reward since she used social media to increase her sales…smart girl) and surprise my step-mother who lives in Val’s town, a teacher at his local middle school.  Next week, he and Kaleigh will be delivering 10 boxes of cookies to the school – 6 Thin Mints, 2 Samoas and 2 Trefoils, compliments of her grandson on the East Coast.  Who doesn’t love a little Girl Scout goodness?  What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie?  Mine is definitely the Samoa.  I can wipe out a whole box faster than you can say “Carbohydrates!”

FILL A METER

They are a necessary evil…the hated meter-reader. Downtown St. Petersburg is one of the easiest places in the world (no exaggeration) to get a ticket. It is as if the meter maids magically appear the SECOND a meter expires in true Star Trek fashion…beamed right to the vehicle. Today, as I walked to my acupuncture appointment, I noticed a car parked in a handicap spot that had an expired meter. Clearly it did not belong to a Millennial as it was the size of the Starship Enterprise and the front seat was full of reading glasses, Kleenex and Tums. I pictured a gentleman in his 70′s coming out of the ice cream shop (paid for by his Social Security) to find a ticket loving placed on his windshield by Meter Reader Kirk. As the meter flashed 0:00, it struck me that there are opportunities to show small gestures of Jenerosity everywhere. Brooks and I filled the meter and left a note wishing him a great day. Maybe we should have told him to ‘Live Long and Prosper.’

BRING THEM DONUTS

If you are like me, you may think that Valentines Day is just a Hallmark holiday. It costs a lot of money, makes people who are single feel inadequate and adds some pounds to the midsection. But, Valentines Day doesn’t just have to be for lovers. It can be viewed as an opportunity to show people who help us everyday how much we love them. And there is no better way than by giving the gift of heart-shaped brownie batter-filled Dunkin’ Donuts. Oh yeah, baby! Today, Brooks delivered 11 to his school’s office for the administration. One managed to get “lost” along the way…hmmmm…

GIVE AWAY EXTRA FOOD

Working at the Food Bank has taught me to focus on using EVERY MORSEL of consumable food, rather than throw anything worthy away. Yesterday, we were at a birthday party and there were a lot of hot dogs and cupcakes left over. Deanie, one of the other moms, suggested we take them around to the homeless folks in the neighborhood. We hopped into the SUV and made the rounds with her daughter, Mackenzie. It was amazing how many people rushed to the vehicle when they saw Deanie carrying a tray of food. What I found most interesting was that many of the homeless people turned down the cupcakes, stating that they weren’t healthy or that they were watching their weight. I wish I had that kind of willpower! I usually turn down the hotdogs instead.
